Rambles and Riff Raff about all this and that

Creative Commons Plugin

Published by Esteban Glas on July 15th, 2009 | This post lacks all category except for: Blog Design

Part of the work I’ve been doing with JD Lasica for his Social Brite project (yes, there is an irony in the fact that a careless, sarcastic SoB teamed up with a caring, polite and nice guy such as JD) included creating a Creative Commons plugin. I’m quite proud to say that I’ve released the plugin for the public in version 0.1 0.1.1.

It is based on the amazing Job by Nathan R. Yergler and his WP-Licencse Plugin.

What WP-license Reloaded does is allowing per-post licensing. This is particularly helpful for multiple author blogs and sites.

This plugin is on its early stages. For the future I have planned:

  • Defaulting licenses (on a per blog and per author basis)
  • Bulk Updating licienses (for older posts)
  • I18n of the plugin.
  • Anything else you might suggest and that I find cool enough to implement.

I’ve always thought that copyright (the traditional one) is a big halt to human and knowledge progress. Now I can lie to myself and think I made some progress by unleashing this plugin to the public.

Feel free to add suggestions in the comments.

  • This is going to be great! I have been looking for improvements on the latter plugin. The mass licensing will be a great feature too!
  • Works great, thank you

    Does not work with me...

First in the installation process there was an error of invalid ZIP format. So automatic instalaltion was off.

After manual unpacking (btw there is another zip inside with the same content) and oploading files goes the second error:

Failed opening required '/wp-content/plugins/wp-license-reloaded/widget.php' (include_path='.:/:/usr/php/pear') in /wp-content/plugins/wp-license-reloaded/wplicense-reloaded.php on line 197

    Using WP 2.8.1 freshly installed...

Thanks for the update - looks like it works. Now as a sugestion I would like to have this plugin internationalized. Thats why currently I have it offline.

    Great Work!!!
  • I18n is in my plans. Added to the development section!

    Thanks for the Feedback.
  • Great idea, I would like to see the ability to have the option on where to position it in a post (perhaps near the top?)

Right now when I add it, the bottom of my posts they look too cluttered and junky.

Cannot get it to work on 2.8.2...

Tried installing this automatically within Wordpress 2.8 and recieved the following error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare licensehtml() (previously declared in /home/XXXXX/public_html/XXXXX/wp-content/plugins/wplicense-0.9/wpLicense/wpLicense.php:32) in /home/XXXXX/public_html/XXXXX/wp-content/plugins/wp-license-reloaded/wplicense-reloaded.php on line 62

Never mind - I managed to solve the fatal error issue above. I had a previous version of wpLicence installed and it was conflicting with this new plugin. Removed it, and it installed perfectly.

Having had a play with it, it would be good to have a third option that would allow you to copy and paste the HTML code of an older CC licence version directly into the CC display, for those times when you may need to reference an older licence than what is available.
  • Aww, snap! I really liked the features described, but it breaks the "Preview" option in WP 2.8.4 :(

When you click "Preview", it does a publish instead (and for some reason, it also disabled both "allow comments" and "allow pings").

The plugin has a major flaw/bug. If the user registers at one sub-blog then
for some reason goes to register on another with the same email address WP-mu
will complain that another account already exists that uses that email address.
The plugin will have to get more complicated to get around this issue.masini de inchiriat
