Spam storm at “The Challenge”

For the last couple of weeks this humble blog has been hit by something in between 200 and 400 spam comments per day. Previously it had been in the 10 to 20 numbers. Has this increase been just for this blog or have others experienced this on their blogs as well?
Akismet does an excellent job catching all of this spam; the only thing that worries me is that some real comments might get caught into Akismet and get deleted amidst bulk editing all this crap.
What would life be without annoyances such as spam?
